Don't know if anyone else has had this problem but thought I'd post it for reference. While starting my TC40D out in the shed the other day I let the tractor warm up for a few minutes before use as usual. As soon as I would release the parking bracke the tractor would die. So immediately I suspected a saftey switch. Upon inspection of the seat switch I noticed that there is a "Z" or "S" shaped piece of spring steel that is used to apply pressure to the switch when sitting in the seat. This piece of steel is held on by two pop rivets. One of the Two rivets had broken on mine allowing the bracket to swivel. To make a long story short it would no longer press on the switch when it rotated. I replaced the rivet with a small bolt and nut.

Sounds like a good fix. I've replaced pop rivets with small machine screws quite a few times. I also used thousands of pop rivets fixing rust damage in my old van before I got welding equipment. Never have liked the things since. The only good I say say of them is that they will fasten things where there is access from only one side. I don't know why anybody would use them if they could be replaced by machine screws--except cost of course. ....

I'm assuming cost was a major reason pop rivets were used. It take alot less labor to pop a rivet than to screw a screw. Also the raw fasteners are cheaper too. ....

I don't believe it! When I hopped off my TC40D today, I flipped the seat because it started raining. I noticed a tiny spot of rust under the seat, and Lo and Behold! I too have lost one of the rivets under my seat! I think that the Deere boys have some kind of conspiracy goin' here. I saw my deere ridin' neighbor smilin' real sneaky like when I looked under the seat. He even volunteered to put a 6" screw in place of the rivet. Makes me wonder if this is a factory defect or not. ....
