Looking for input on proper tractor selection. Just bought 18 acre homeplace now grazing cattle. Soil is sand/clay mix in Texas. Loader and bale spear would be needed. Post holer would be a 'nice to have', not a need to have.
Is 45 horse appropriate?
Would want enough power that some acreage could go under the till if necessary for hay.
Have had chance to operate a smaller JD diesel with tiller, mower and loader. Liked their 4 wheel hydro, hydraulics were strong but not too smooth, excellent fuel economy, but a full bucket of sandy loam could cause a nose dive easily with the bucket at 4-5 feet.
Need some serious guidance from some veterans here.

Ray, my personal opinion is that 45hp will be amount the minimum if you're going to do much tillage and/or use a bale spear on the front end loader. ....

Sounds like a 45 HP tractor should get the work done fairly quickly. Of course, the tilling likely could be done with a smaller tractor but it just take longer. Different story with hay bales though. Today's big bales are just too heavy and unwieldy for many small tractors. At least that was my dealer's story of how my 24 PTO HP tractor came to the used market. The previous owner got more livestock and the compact just wouldn't manage the bales his supplier was delivering, so he traded for a farm tractor. ....

Really appreciate the input.
Have gone to New Holland web page and looked at the TN series (47-62 fwhp), Ford, Kubota and Deere, though the Deere and Kubota pages was not that user friendly.
You fellows provide me the best direct input and it is appreciated ....

I would recomend that you look for at least 50 PTO horse power. I have a JD 5205 4X4 (48 PTO HP) that I use with a Case IH 8430 round bailer, a JD 336 square bailer with a # 30 kicker and a Case IH 9' 1190 mower conditioner. I would not want any less horse power - or just as important, tractor weight, than I have in the 5205.
