The other day we rescued an owl that had been hit by a car. We took him in and nursed him but no luck. Picture 6 is his photo. Some say he was an eastern hoot owl, but I can not find any picture like him. He was 5" from his feet to his head. Any conformation?

Eric, I think that is (was?) a juvenile Long-eared Owl.

I can't seem to find any pictures or links to a juvenile at the moment, but the link below is what he should have looked like if not for his early demise, which is unfortunate because they are an endangered species.

Best of luck. ....

Na! He does not look as dopey as Peter Falk. ;-)

Body type he is closer to the Elf Owl, but he had small tuffs and should not be in this local. I place a ruler next to him and he was only 5 inches from the feet to the head. ....

My vote goes for the Southern Screech Owl check out the link. The sound that this Owl makes, it seems he would be 10' tall. ....

Thanks I could not find a good picture of the redish south eastern variety. The tuff on this one seem small and it is rather small over all. I would think even if he was a juvenile he would be near full size at this time of year. ....

I am not sure it is the car or the owl. Normally owls are as agile a flyer as they come. Maybe they are sick?

It was only a week before a bird came swooping down at night and hit the antenna on my truck. This is miles away from where we found this one and I tried to find it in the dark. I did not get a good look at it as it just flashed by the window in the dark. I thought it was likely an owl. ....

KT; It would be something to see an owl carry away my 6700lb Ram. Maybe the decals confused it? :)

Ann; Yes I think it is likely a pigmy variety of the south eastern screech owl. The picture SG found is pretty close. ....

Ann; Yes the one in the nest is close with the small tuffs at the ears. I guess the size of the tuffs are also a variant along with color. ....
