I need to remove the flywheel..... does it require a special JD puller? If so, can anybody tell me the part number please?

I'm sure the right person would tell you to get a puller. My puller is two medium to large flat blade chisels wedged between the flywheel and the case with a couple of light taps and a whack on the end of the crank with a BIG hammer. I think Deere thinks we take them off that way too, that's why they don't have threads all the way out. They always come off for me. I'm sure a large straight bar puller would do the trick too. There are holes drilled opposite each other for the alternator pulley ....

Okay... many thanks for that. Just one last question, and a really silly one at that. I'm having a lot of difficulty getting the nut off; from what little thread is exposed it looks like a standard thread, i.e. anti-clockwise to unscrew. Is that right? ....

Yes sir, anti-clockwise as you say. I always do it with an impact gun so I really don't know how it would be by hand. Torque spec is only 80 ft/lb. ....
