I have been woking on a 4x6 gator first it kept overheating. I think i have that problem fixed now. But know it is backfiring when i shut it off...is there a way to adjust the timing on these i dont have a timing light and im just not sure what to do.

There is no timing adjustment. Only thing it may be is a partially sheared flywheel key. I believe you may have something in your muffler that is igniting the unburnt fuel or your muffler spark arrestor is plugged up. I have had Gators that have needed the motors rebuilt. The old motor filled the muffler up with oil deposits and after the new one was installed it would ignite the deposits in the muffler until they got burned out. ....
