My father-in-law owns a 2000 JD 4400 with 410 hours on it. It has a 420 loader attatched to it. It is gear driven, not hydro. He can no longer use his tractor due to health reasons and wants to sell it. He loves his tractor (washes it after every use) and hates to stop using it, but knows he can't use it anymore. He lives in Arkansas and I live in SC. He and Mom are moving here in a couple of months. I am trying to find out what a good asking price would be. JD dealer says trade in is around $6700 and high retail is around $8900 for just the tractor, then add about $1200 for the loader. The low hours and like-new condition says to me it's worth 'high-end' but I have no idea. It also has a Howse #500 bush hog attatched to it that is in the same condition. I've been told that these size tractors are 'hot' right now. Is this tractor worth more in SC instead of Ark? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I found a buyer (at the right price) delivery could be an option when I bring some of thier stuff here in Nov.

I'd say you are under the money, I doubt that twice the money you are asking would buy a new tractor and loader of like size and equipment. I don't know about the bush hog but I'd think a new one would top two grand so 12-1300. wouldn't be out of line. Everyone has their opinions on such matters but to me not having a hydro transmission is a positive. I've owned three 4000 series Deere's all with the E-Power Reverser transmission, if I were to trade tomorrow I'd insist on another E-Power Reverser transmision.

Stew, to me the price issue between the two states will have to be checked locally. This size tractor is not probably in high demand in real rural area compared to more estate area will find it. That is my opinion. I think if you are near say Greenville, Columbia or Charleston will find a decent demand for it. If say Batesburg not so much. Landscaper or homeowner is probably your market. Construction might be but it is so down they are not buying but still selling. Will tell you I live in the general area of Myrtle Beach, when I bought small used Kubota saved at least couple of thousand buy in Sumter compared to here. ....

I live in the Greenville area. I have a friend who is a landscaper who says if it comes here, I should have no problem selling it. I told mom to list it for $14,000 and take no less than 12 for it. Thanks for all the help so far! ....

NO, it's not sold yet. I have been asking around here, but not aggressively. Mom and Dad have it for sale in Ark/Mo. If it doesn't sell bythe time I go there to move them here, I'll bring it to SC and list it. ....

Right now the tractor is living in Arkansas, near Branson, MO. If it does not get sold there by the end of October, it will be moved to SC, or delivered on the way to a new owner. I don't have any pictures of it. According to the VIN, it has a gear-shift transmission, not hydrostatic. If I get any pictures, I will post them. ....
