We are looking at a JD 855 with approx. 800 hours, JD 70A loader, 24 hp. diesel hydrostatic drive, 1980s, owner not sure what year, 6' JD 272 mower, rear tires (lug) have inside corners of lugs chewed off probably from 3 pt. bars hitting. Is owner's asking price of $10,500 reasonable?

2WD or 4WD? IMHO it seems a little high either way, but it's probably $1.5-2k high if it's 2WD. Check out pricing for it at machinerylink dot com. 2WD vs. 4WD makes a difference. ....

Thank you for the tip to use the machinerylink website - lots of good information! We are novices at this tractor-buying and appreciate your help. This tractor is 4WD, but on the above website I found that a 24 hp JD855 tractor was only made in 1997; all the other years it was 19hp. The dealer said it was from the 80s and 24 hp. So now we're confused; is there any way of finding out exactly what we're looking at? Can a serial number, if we can get it, be used?
We have a 26 acre home site that we need to mow, dig up rocks, etc. and we're not even sure the 24 hp tractor would be big enough, so it seems important to know exactly what we're getting. Anybody have any recommendations?
Thanks again for any help anyone can give us. ....

For fun I looked up some mid 80s 855s that were listed for sale. Some were advertised as 19hp, some were 24hp, and one was 28hp. Probably the only way to tell for sure is to get the engine model and serial numbers and email JD and/or Yanmar to see what they say. You could also ask the dealer for documentation to show the hp rating of the tractor. Machinerylink is far from 100% accurate.

As far as your needs, how much of your 26 acres do you have to mow, is it finish or brush mowing, and how big are these rocks you want to dig up? ....

I bought my user manuals off Ebay for about $10-15 each.
They come up often. I have had JD955s, which share many components with the 655, 755, 855. Do a search for "deere 855". These tractors were made approx 86-96.

As for price, 10.5K for an 855 in primo condition with nice
attachments may not be out of line. It had better be sweet,
however. ....
