Could someone please tell me the specifications for a John Deere 430 garden tractor that was the precursor to the 455 (HP, weight, years made, etc) as well as any comments on its quality, reliability, ability to snow plow, york rake, etc? Also, what is a good price to buy one with 750 hrs?

The 430 was an excellent tractor. I owned three of them. The 430 had some advantages over the 455. The 430 has a longer wheelbase (smoother ride). It also has turning breaks and the two-speed rear axle. The two speed axle gives you a transport speed of 11 mph which is quite useful. The 455 has the two pedal hydro control which is an improvement over the 430. The professional highback seat is nicer on the 455. The tilt steering wheel on the 455 is also an improvement. The 430 was virtually indestructable and should be a good tractor if the price is right. ....

I second the last post. The 430 is an excellent tractor! In terms of specs the 430 has a 20Hp Yanmar Diesel engine. The engine is identical to the engine found in the JD-750 Compact Utility. They are agreat engine! With an adapter kit mounted on the front most if not all implements for the JD-400/420 will fit the 430. I had a 44 loader and 54" blade for mine. In my opinion, I feel the 430 is built better than the newer 400 series. Lot less use of plastic parts and a "cheesier" dash and controls. Good Luck on the purchase. ....

You asked for specs. According to the 1998 Farm Equipment Guide the 430 was mfd from 1984-92. The tractor weighs 1219 lbs. 20 PTO HP - 53.6 CID. Their is a gas version also. Both Gas and Diesel engines were made by Yanmar. The tractor has a shaft driven 60" deck. Average Auction Pricing is $4155. We bought ours (a '92) 3 years ago for roughly $6000 with 125 hours. Hope this information helps. Regards Mark

I have a 430 with 3500 hours according to the hour meter. Still runs.

Does anyone have experience with the snowblower attachment?
I'm considering buying one - if I can find one. ....
