I just got an e-mail confirmation from John Deere.
They just listed the cleaning of the suction screen and changing of the hydraulic fluid/filter as the 50 hr break-in maintainance for my JD 790. This not mentioned in my manual #OMM139226 A9 DATED 98 SO MUCH TO THE UPDATES that should have been mailed out to all owners!!!

nothin for nothin being the 990 has one more cylinder has similar hydraulics/ 4wd with power steering and uses the same j20c/j20d hydraulic fluid I would do it just for peace of mind.!!!!!!! The Tech did mention that this change occured in manual OMLVU14371 ISSUE J2 790 PIN(592446-) DIDN'T REALLY GIVE A DATE. however you'r serial #'s will be different for the 990 anyway.

I got this info from John Deere's web site(contact us) ....

I followed that advice on my Deere 4300, and changed the fluid, cleaned the screen, and replaced the filter. I found a mat of fine steel particles (almost like lint) on the screen which didn't come close to blocking the entire screen, but I was glad I had that stuff out of there. The first 50 hours apparently is a good flushing-out period for cleaning up the gears and transmission parts. ....

Jazak, did you get the notion that this 50 hour change applies to all gear tractors? I am wondering if I should do it to my 4100..... it has 79 hours on the clock. ....

Mark,

Accordng to my OM, the 50 hour service is for gear and hydro trans. They changed the intervals when they came out with the 10 series.

My inquiry was for my 790 only and posted it as such. Hydro is not an option on this machine. Why would they change the 790 manual or did the just put the 790 cover on the 10 series manual ???? !!??!! JD aknowledged the change for the 790 . The 990 is the GEAR big brother I would ASSUME it would also apply. ....

I e-mailed Deere and asked about any changes with the 4100 Gear. They said there are no changes and I should follow my OM. It says to change the hydro/tranny fluid at 500 hours. ....

Mark,

I didn't mean to mislead you. I was going by the old manual for my 4600. It said to change hydraulic oil at 500 hours, gear and hydro trans.

Now I have the 4610 and the manual says after the first 50 hours, change oil, the 2 filters and clean the suction screen. It states to do this on the gear and hydro models.

I do know they change the trans filter on the older 4600 tractors. They went to a larger filter and suggested changing oil and filter more often. This was due to the trouble JD had with the hydro models but did include gear too.

I just assumed it was for your tractor also. I reckon that's what I get for assuming. Sorry

Billy ....

Always best from the horses mouth, as they say.
Anyway 500 hours seems like a real long time to go on the original oil.
I may change it out anyway. ....

just changed my oil at 62 hrs, don't wait for 500 !!!
The strainer was covered with steel "lint"/ filter was glued with sludge(doing its job).!! I cut the filter in half.
I had to drop the clevis pin/ rod from the left brake lever so the stainer could clear the frame mount on the 7 series hoe .
Be carefull about drain plug/retainer bolt torque !!!!! The strainer housing retainer is aluminum !!!!
I took my time and I'm back in business. ....

Interesting. Made me go back to the owners manual. The 4100 Gear apparently does not have a hydraulic fluid filter. Just a metal screen on the intake. ....

I plan on crawling under it tomorrow just to make sure, but I don't remember any filters.

My auto-tranny's in both vehicles get by with a screen, and I have never even seen a screen on other manual transmissions.

Yes, I know it is also the hydro fluid........ just trying to process the information....... ....

Check and clean rockshaft control valve filter?

I have a JD 4610 and there's no mention of this in the OM. I've never heard of a control valve filter. That doesn't mean much though ;)

Billy I did not look at my 4400 manual BUT there is a strainer in that circuit. It is a black cylinder 3-4" long in the hyd line, across the back. It has a mesh screen in it. With the power beyond kit the strainer is moved to the hyd hose. Is this description clear as mud??? :-) Harvey ....

I have a vague recollection that the very same in-line filter was subject to a factory upgrade. There was some discussion about the screen coming off and lodging in the system. I think an upgraded element was mentioned. Even if my recollection is right, I have no idea which years might be affected.

I had trouble wondering why the filter would be there in the first place since all oil goes through a far better filter before reaching the pump. I finally figured that maybe it's to catch foreign material that might get into the system when changing quick connect lines on loader valves.

It doesn't mention this control valve filter anywhere in my OM. I haven't had a chance to go look but I don't recall seeing any filters other than the 2 hydra filters, oil filter, and suction screen.

I do know, on the new 4610 hydros, they added the suction screen, larger suction side filter and a hydraulic filter.

Maybe someone with a 4510, 4610 or 4710 will chime in and give me the lowdown.

I have and new question now.
After reading the topics on this mesage board i thought it might be a good idea to change my hydrolic oil in my 790 john deere with 90 hours. I removed the screen and cleand out all metal shaveings. Now i can't get the area were the screen is to stop leaking. Did you have this problem with your 790? There was no gasket! Should there be? It just slowly dripps and is driving me mad. ....
