Clearing Land
When I was a kid growing up that's what dad called cleaning brush weeds etc. off land.
Don't feel bad about not knowing what it means .
I was just talking to my brother on the phone and he didn't even know what his own dad said about it.

I've done quite a bit of grubbing with the BH and FEL.

I remember the time my cousin and I grubbed of a hill side for this lady.
Back then 20 bucks looked like a lot of money to 2 kids.
All we had to work with were regular hoes hand rakes hatchets and shovels
NO string trimmers and no power mower back then.
The place must have been a half acre or more of solid brush weeds and briars
At the end of the week it took us to grub it 20 dollars didn't look like near as much as it did in the beginning.

In the northwest the term is swamping. I worked for a short while swamping in the woods. We swamped some 15 or 20 miles of logging road, with machette once. We also swamped out survey lines for new roads high in the mountains. We had a Stihl extended blade cutter, but it lasted about a day. Now here they run down the rightaway with a machine or spray it. Even thirty years ago the use of herbicides in the Pacific Nortwest was curtailed. ....
